KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has set the date for the by-election for the Mahkota State Assembly (DUN) in Johor to be held on September 28.

The announcement was made by EC Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun earlier today at the EC Tower.

He stated that the nomination day for the by-election will be on September 14, with early voting scheduled for September 24.

Before the announcement, the EC held a special meeting to discuss the proceedings and important dates for the Mahkota by-election.

The meeting was also attended by EC Deputy Chairman Dr. Azmi Sharom and EC Secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak.

The Mahkota DUN seat became vacant following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, on August 2.

On August 4, Ikmalrudin announced that the special meeting was held after the EC received official notification from the Speaker of the Johor State Assembly, Datuk Dr. Mohd Puad Zarkashi, regarding the unexpected vacancy of the Mahkota DUN seat.

Mahkota State Assembly member Sharifah Azizah, 63, passed away while receiving treatment at the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital (HEBHK) in Kluang.

In the Johor State Election in March 2022, Sharifah Azizah, who was also a Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, won the Mahkota DUN seat by a majority of 5,166 votes.
