Dr Mahathir’s Current Situation: Fahmi Reminds Content Creators, Influencers to Exercise Decency

KUALA LUMPUR: Content creators, influencers and social media users should exercise decency, discretion and humanity when producing content, particularly in relation to the current situation involving former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said that while many people were keen to know about the former prime minister’s latest developments and health condition, not everything needed to be turned into news or social media content.

“Technology may change and we may have different views, but we should not use social media to the point where we lose our sense of decency, morality and humanity,” he said in a video posted on X tonight.

Fahmi therefore urged all parties to give Dr Mahathir and his family the space and time they need as they continue to mourn the passing of the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

He said Dr Mahathir’s son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, had earlier requested that the family be given space and privacy while they grieve.

Fahmi also reminded social media users not to spread speculative content, insensitive artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material or inappropriate statements.

“If we come across humiliating content, insensitive AI-generated material or even posts wishing inappropriate things on someone, don’t share them, don’t comment on the posts and don’t give them views.

“If you see content like this, report it immediately to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or the police,” he said.
