KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will identify companies or individuals that provide rental car services to foreigners who do not have valid licenses or insurance. JPJ Enforcement Director, Muhammad Kifli Ma Hasan said, the action follows the case of three foreigners who were spotted boarding a car from Penang on business.

“If we looked earlier, there was a Honda City type vehicle that was detained, as a result of the investigation it was found that the driver and his two friends rented the vehicle to go to Penang.

“Following this case, we will identify the owner of the vehicle and take evidence for investigation. If it is true that the vehicle is for rent, we will take action under other offenses,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after conducting an Integrated Operation with departments and enforcement agencies at the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza last night.

Among those involved are the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM), the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the Department of the Environment (DOE).

Muhammad Kifli added that the number of accidents involving foreigners on the road is currently increasing and causing public concern.

“For example, we saw foreigners riding tricycles carrying scrap metal, most of them were found to be disobeying road rules. “However, we will always make continuous enforcement to monitor cases like this,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, commenting on the use of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps, he insisted that any modification involving them would be subject to action.

He explained that the use of HID lights is only allowed if they follow the original specifications from the vehicle manufacturer approved by the JPJ.

“JPJ would like to advise users and vehicle owners to always obey all road rules that have been set.

“This department is always committed to ensure the safety and well-being of road users is always maintained and at the best level,” he said. Earlier, a total of 2,512 vehicles were inspected with 196 of them being taken action in the Integrated Operation which was carried out from 8pm to 1am.

It is implemented to detect and take action against behavior or offenses of failing to comply with the rules set out under Act 333 and the rules under it to minimize the rate of accidents and deaths on the road.
