KUALA LUMPUR: Singer and vocalist of the renowned rock band Bumiputra Rockers (BPR), Joey, whose real name was Johari Mat Rozekhi, passed away at the age of 63 at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) this morning.
The news of the late singer’s passing was confirmed by his wife, Zarinah Zainal, to the news portal Harian Metro.
According to Zarinah, her husband breathed his last at 8.11 am.
Zarinah said that the late Joey had performed at Laman Santai, Istana Budaya on Friday night, delivering two songs before collapsing and being rushed to HKL for treatment.
Zarinah said that a doctor’s examination found that Joey had suffered bleeding as well as complications from blocked coronary arteries.
“Everything happened too quickly. Joey was a very kind person, and I am grateful to have been blessed with him,” she said in tears, as reported by the portal.
Joey’s passing is a great loss to the country’s music industry, particularly to fans of 1980s and 1990s rock music who grew up with the popular songs performed by Bumiputra Rockers.
Among the late Joey’s popular songs are Seribu Tahun Takkan Mungkin, Harum Subur Di Hati, and Dari Sinar Mata.
The late Joey was known for his unique voice and energetic performances, which made BPR one of the rock bands that earned a special place among local music fans.
