Awang Bemee appointed as new President of the Senate

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Sarawak State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Nangka, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, has been appointed as the new President of the Senate on Monday.

According to Astro Awani, he replaces the former Senate President Datuk Mutang Tagal, who passed away in May.

Previously, Awang Bemee took the oath of office as a Senator on May 15.

He served as the ADUN for Nangka for three terms from 1996 to 2011 and has also held the position of Secretary-General of the Youth Wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the party’s Supreme Council (MKT).

The PBB Legal Advisor and Public Officer for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is also currently the Chairman of the Kuching Port Authority and Director of Sarawak Plantation Berhad.

He is an experienced legal practitioner who has handled civil and criminal cases in all courts up to the Federal Court since being admitted as a barrister and solicitor by the Borneo High Court in 1984.

Born on June 22, 1959, Awang Bemee holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Malaya.
