Asean Reaffirms Push for Myanmar to Honour Five Point Consensus: Foreign Minister

NEW YORK, Sept 26 (VoM): ASEAN will continue to press Myanmar to fully implement the Five Point Consensus and support ongoing mediation efforts aimed at restoring national reconciliation, said Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Speaking at the Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations (UN) Group of Friends of Mediation, held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday, Mohamad said that ASEAN member states remain united in upholding these commitments.

“Myanmar must move forward with the Five-Point Consensus. ASEAN stands ready to support the Special Envoy’s facilitation of dialogue among all stakeholders,” he said.

Myanmar has been mired in political and humanitarian turmoil since the military ousted the elected National Unity Government (NUG) on February 1, 2021. In response, ASEAN leaders convened an emergency summit in April that year, adopting the Five-Point Consensus. The plan called for an immediate cessation of violence, constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected communities.

On regional security, Mohamad also addressed ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. He stressed that ASEAN would continue to facilitate meaningful dialogue and secure both sides’ commitment to the ceasefire agreement.

“As ASEAN Chair in 2025, we were called to respond and resolve the Cambodia-Thailand border tensions. We aim to deploy an ASEAN Observers Team to maintain transparency on the ground,” he noted.

Cambodia and Thailand have been locked in a decades-long territorial dispute along their 817-kilometer border. The conflict reignited on July 24 when both countries exchanged fire but was resolved on July 28 following a special meeting in Putrajaya organized by Malaysia, where both sides reached a ceasefire agreement.

Observers say ASEAN’s active role in these regional challenges underscores its commitment to peace, stability, and dialogue as central pillars of its diplomacy.
