Anwar Departs for Russia to Attend ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today departed from Subang Air Base to Kazan, Russian Federation, to attend the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit.

In a Facebook post, Anwar informed that he is scheduled to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in addition to attending the Russia-ASEAN Business Forum.

“After the agenda in Kazan, I will then proceed to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan for an official visit at the invitation of President Serdar Berdimuhamedow.

“I ask for the prayers of friends that my affairs and the Malaysian delegation be made easy, thereby bringing the best benefits and returns to the country,” he said.

Earlier, Wisma Putra informed that the Prime Minister, who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan from June 17 to 18, will be accompanied by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, the Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, as well as officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The summit marks the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations, which began in Kuala Lumpur in 1991.

According to Wisma Putra, the meeting will provide an opportunity for ASEAN and Russia to review the progress achieved over the past 35 years and chart the future direction of cooperation under the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership.

Discussions are expected to focus on efforts to strengthen practical cooperation in trade and investment, energy, food security, the digital economy, science and technology, culture, education, tourism, as well as direct people-to-people interaction.
