KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman on his party’s victory in the country’s general election, describing the outcome as a milestone for democracy in Bangladesh.
In a Facebook post today, Anwar said the Bangladeshi people had delivered a clear mandate through the ballot box despite facing extraordinary challenges.
He also praised Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus for his leadership as chief adviser during the transition period, noting his role in ensuring a smooth and credible democratic process.
“Malaysia remains committed to strengthening cooperation with the new administration in Bangladesh,” Anwar said, adding that Kuala Lumpur looks forward to working with the new leadership to inject fresh momentum into bilateral relations.
The prime minister extended warm greetings from Malaysia and its people to the citizens of Bangladesh.
According to foreign media reports, more than 127.6 million Bangladeshis were eligible to vote in the election, which also included a referendum on constitutional reforms. The 13th parliamentary election was seen as a major political event for the nation of 175 million people, following mass protests in August 2024 that led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique Rahman, 60, is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman.
