KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that Kuala Lumpur (KL) remains a safe city for visitors.

According to Berita Harian, Anwar emphasized that residents, especially tourists visiting the capital, need not worry or be concerned following the recent sinkhole incident in Masjid India last Friday.

Anwar stated that he has visited the sinkhole area and that immediate actions have been taken by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to address the issue.

“(According to reports) the sinkhole has been established through a technical study, and no problems have been found so far.

“Currently, we are working promptly to reinforce the affected area (of the sinkhole).

“The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, is also monitoring and reviewing the situation daily. As of now, there are no issues of concern; KL remains safe,” he said.

He made these remarks to reporters when asked about public concerns, especially tourists who are beginning to worry about visiting KL due to claims that the city might no longer be safe.

This follows the sinkhole incident at Masjid India, which resulted in an Indian tourist going missing after falling into the hole while passing through the area last Friday.

Earlier, social media on Facebook circulated claims that KL is the most unsafe place in Malaysia, with a potential risk of a ‘giant sinkhole’ occurring at any time.

In the incident last Friday, a woman named Vijayaletchumy, 48, from Kuppam, Andhra, India, went missing after falling into an eight-meter-deep hole, with the search and rescue (SAR) operation now entering its eighth day.
