Agong, Raja Permaisuri Agong Extend Condolences on Passing of Tun Dr Hasmah
KUALA LUMPUR: [UPDATED] Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah have extended their condolences on the passing of the late Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali.
In a post on Sultan Ibrahim’s social media page, Their Majesties also prayed that Allah SWT would bestow His mercy upon the late Dr Hasmah and place her among the faithful and righteous.
Dr Hasmah was reported to have passed away at 9.20am at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Born on July 12, 1926, in Klang, Selangor, Dr Hasmah was among Malaysia’s earliest Malay women doctors and went on to build a long career in medicine, public health and community service.
She pursued her medical studies at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore and graduated in 1955.
After joining the Ministry of Health, she served as a medical officer in several parts of the country, including Kedah, with much of her work focused on public health and maternal and child healthcare.
Dr Hasmah married former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1956.
The couple had four biological children — Datin Paduka Marina, Tan Sri Mirzan, Tan Sri Mokhzani and former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz — as well as three adopted children, Melinda, Mazhar and Maizura.
Dr Hasmah, who celebrated her 100th birthday on July 12, was one of the country’s pioneering women in medicine and made significant contributions to public health, particularly maternal and child healthcare.
