KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, will embark on a landmark state visit to the Russian Federation from August 5 to 10, 2025, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Istana Negara announced in a statement today.
This visit will mark a historic milestone as Sultan Ibrahim becomes the first Malaysian Head of State to make an official state visit to Russia since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1967.
“The visit signifies the key role of the Malaysian monarchy in advancing the country’s diplomacy and foreign relations,” said Istana Negara.
During the five-day visit, His Majesty will participate in a range of high-level events aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade, higher education, science and technology, innovation, and cultural exchange.
In Moscow, Sultan Ibrahim will be accorded full state honors with a ceremonial welcome at the Kremlin, followed by a bilateral meeting with President Putin. His Majesty is also expected to attend a state banquet hosted in his honor by the Russian President.
As part of the program in Russia’s capital, the King will also visit key research and innovation institutions, including the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub.
Following his engagements in Moscow, Sultan Ibrahim will travel to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan on August 8. Tatarstan, one of Russia’s autonomous republics, is known for its strong Islamic heritage and technological development.
In Kazan, His Majesty will meet with the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, and tour a prominent helicopter manufacturing and assembly plant, underscoring growing interest in Malaysia Russia industrial and technological collaboration.
As Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, the visit is also expected to bolster strategic regional cooperation, particularly with Russia’s status as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1996.
The state visit underscores Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation with global partners.
