MELAKA: A young couple, both medical professionals in their mid-20s, were detained by the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) on Tuesday afternoon over an alleged khalwat (close proximity) offence at a residence in Taman Semabok Perdana.

According to Datuk Rahmad Mariman, Chairman of the Melaka Education, Higher Learning and Religious Affairs Committee, enforcement officers from JAIM conducted a raid at approximately 3.25pm, resulting in the arrest of the couple, both aged 26.

“They were fully clothed at the time of arrest and were brought to the JAIM office for further investigation before being released on bail,” Rahmad said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 53 of the Melaka Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1991. If convicted, the couple could face a fine of up to RM3,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.

Prior to the arrest, several local residents, mosque officials, and police personnel gathered outside the house. The couple allegedly delayed opening the door for nearly 20 minutes before finally cooperating when JAIM officers arrived.

It was later revealed that the male doctor claimed he was residing at the rented premises along with two housemates who were not present during the raid.

JAIM has stated that investigations are ongoing.
