JAKARTA: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim kicked off his official visit to Indonesia today by attending the 13th Annual Consultation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Istana Merdeka in Jakarta, underscoring the deep-rooted brotherhood and shared aspirations between the two nations.

In a time of increasing global uncertainty, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Southeast Asian region through bold, visionary, and strategic cooperation. Central to their discussion was the shared ambition to boost bilateral trade to USD 30 billion and to expand investment collaboration, particularly in Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara (IKN).

The two leaders also addressed pressing cross-border issues, including improving the flow of people and goods through key entry points like Entikong, as well as finalizing long-pending agreements on land and maritime border demarcation. These initiatives, Anwar stressed, are designed to deliver real, tangible benefits to citizens living along the border—not merely agreements on paper.

Prime Minister Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s long-standing and sincere commitment to investing in Indonesia’s strategic sectors, from renewable energy and infrastructure to housing, education, and technology. “Malaysia is not a temporary guest—we are a brother nation with a shared dream for the future,” he stated.

On regional security, both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation under the Trilateral Cooperative Arrangement (TCA) to safeguard the Sulu and Sulawesi Seas. Anwar further emphasized Malaysia’s unwavering priority in securing the strategic waters of the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, warning against complacency and foreign dominance in determining the region’s fate.

The two sides also unified their voices on several pressing global issues, including anti-palm oil campaigns and the ongoing violence in Gaza. Anwar declared that both Malaysia and Indonesia “will never shy away from challenging injustice,” asserting that these are not just developing countries but proud nations with dignity.

Concluding the visit, Anwar described the Jakarta trip not merely as a diplomatic meeting but as a powerful joint statement—one that calls for Southeast Asia to be led with courage, rooted in the needs of the people, and determined to build a fairer, more stable, and prosperous future for the region.
