KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Voice of Malaysia): Malaysia, as the current Chair of ASEAN, has expressed grave concern over the recent armed clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops near their disputed border, urging both nations to exercise “utmost restraint” and resolve the issue through peaceful means.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, also known as Tok Mat, issued a statement on Friday urging immediate de-escalation and emphasizing the importance of diplomacy in maintaining regional peace and stability.

“Malaysia, as chair of ASEAN, is following with deep concern the clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops at the disputed border on July 24, which have resulted in casualties,” he said. “We urge both parties to exercise utmost restraint and to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions.”

Mohamad reiterated Malaysia’s readiness to assist in brokering peace, stating that the ASEAN Chair stands willing to offer its good offices to facilitate an amicable and mutually acceptable resolution between the two nations.

“Malaysia wishes to underscore the importance of resolving the border dispute through dialogue and diplomacy, in the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and good neighborliness,” he added.

The Foreign Minister also revealed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has personally reached out to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, appealing for an immediate ceasefire.

“He appealed directly to both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further hostilities and to create space for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolutions,” said Mohamad.

The clashes, which reportedly erupted on July 24 in a long-disputed border area, have raised alarm across the ASEAN region, prompting urgent calls for calm and negotiation.

Malaysia’s proactive diplomatic outreach underscores its commitment to regional stability and its responsibilities as the 2025 ASEAN Chair.
