UN Chief Urges Peaceful Resolution of Global Conflicts Amid “Horror Show in Gaza”

UNITED NATIONS, July 23 (Voice of Malaysia): The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday calling on all 193 UN member states to settle disputes through peaceful means, as Secretary-General António Guterres warned of deepening global crises and widespread violations of international law.

Drafted by Pakistan, the resolution reaffirms the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, emphasizing diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution methods such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and judicial settlement.

Speaking at the high-level Security Council meeting, Guterres condemned the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling it “a horror show,” and cited ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti, and Myanmar. “Around the world, we see an utter disregard for—if not outright violations of—international law,” he said. “Starvation is knocking on every door [in Gaza] as Israel denies the United Nations the space and safety to deliver aid and save Palestinian lives.”

Israel has denied targeting civilians or obstructing humanitarian access, accusing UN agencies of failing to distribute aid that has been permitted entry.

Highlighting the broader global impact, Guterres said that hunger and displacement are at record highs, exacerbated by terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational crime. Despite the failures of diplomacy in some areas, he emphasized that it “still holds the power to stop” violence and instability.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who chaired the session, underscored the importance of revitalizing multilateralism. He cited “the ongoing tragedies in Gaza and the unresolved Kashmir dispute” as examples that must be resolved through peaceful dialogue. “At the heart of almost all the conflicts across the globe is a crisis of multilateralism—a failure, not of principles but of will,” Dar said.

He urged equal treatment of conflicts based on international law rather than geopolitical interests, calling for renewed faith in the UN’s ability to foster global peace.

Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea echoed the importance of peaceful diplomacy, noting the U.S. role in de-escalating tensions under President Donald Trump between nations such as Israel and Iran, India and Pakistan, and Congo and Rwanda. She also called for a halt to Russia’s war in Ukraine, demanding Moscow cease attacks on civilians and respect international law.

“The war in Ukraine must end,” Shea declared. “We call on other UN member states to stop providing Russia with the means to continue its aggression.”

She also criticized China’s activities in the South China Sea, labeling them “unlawful claims” that challenge regional stability.

Tuesday’s resolution serves as a firm reminder of the international community’s collective responsibility to pursue peace, uphold the UN Charter, and recommit to the principles of diplomacy amid growing geopolitical fractures.
