JEDDAH: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) hailed the historic resolution that the United Nations General Assembly adopted on Friday with a resounding majority. The resolution emphasised that Palestine’s state is eligible to become a full member and was granted extra rights.

Emirates News Agency (WAM) said that the OIC said in a statement that this resolution reflected a global consensus in support of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, such as freedom, justice, independence, and self-determination, and that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories that it has occupied since 1967 must end.

It declared its unwavering support for Palestine’s state’s legitimate rights to represent its political and legal stance at the UN alongside all other states, citing this as a victory that has been needed for decades.

In addition to the official recognition of 144 states of Palestine’s state, which has full membership in dozens of international organisations and accords, it pointed to the historical, legal, and political rights of the Palestinian people to their land as verified by the pertinent UN resolutions.

As WAM reported, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution endorsing Palestine’s right to full membership in the organisation and recommended that the UN Security Council reevaluate the Palestinian bid. In the meantime, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed these developments in Riyadh.

The secretary-general of the GCC said that the resolution’s voting by 143 nations demonstrated support for the Palestinian people’s right to recognition and their belief in that right, allowing the State of Palestine to fulfil all of its obligations within this international organisation.

In line with pertinent UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, he emphasised the GCC’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its goal of finding a solution centred on putting an end to Israeli occupation and creating an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital. – Bernama, WAM
