Tears, Triumphs, and Salutes: Iranian Women Athletes Showcase Patriotism and Pride on Global Stage

Tehran, July 20 (VOM-Voice of Malaysia): In a remarkable week for Iranian women’s sports, national teams across football, basketball, and handball not only delivered impressive performances on the international stage but also captured global attention with powerful displays of national pride and solidarity.

What stood out beyond the scoreboard was the recurring sight of military salutes performed by Iranian women athletes during the national anthem—a stirring gesture of unity with their country and its armed forces in the wake of recent national tragedy.

A Week of Victories and Valor :

On Saturday night, the Iranian women’s football team clinched a historic qualification for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the second time with a 2-0 win over host nation Jordan. Goals by Sara Didar (47’) and Negin Zandi (82’) sealed the victory, but the emotional high point came before kickoff, when the entire team stood solemnly during the anthem, raising their hands in a military salute to the Iranian flag—many of them fighting back tears.

Following their qualification, a video went viral showing the players singing the patriotic song “Iran, Fadāye Ashk o Khande-ye To” (“Iran, may I be sacrificed for your tears and smiles”) in their hotel lobby—a heartfelt moment that resonated deeply with Iranians at home and abroad.

The military salute has become a unifying symbol across Iran’s sports community in the aftermath of the 12-day Israeli-American assault on Iran, which killed nearly 1,000 people, including senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians — some of them young athletes. The unprovoked attack ended in a unilateral ceasefire declared by Washington, widely seen in Iran as a retreat and moral defeat for the aggressors.

Basketball and Handball Teams Join in Solidarity:

Iran’s women’s basketball team continued the momentum by defeating Thailand 78–52 in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup semifinals. The team, now headed to the final against Chinese Taipei, has saluted the flag before every game—a practice inspired by their football counterparts.

Similarly, the women’s junior handball team, competing in the Asian Women’s Handball Championship in China, also adopted the salute tradition. Videos of the players standing proudly with hands raised to the flag have gone viral, receiving praise across Iranian media and social platforms.

Men’s Volleyball Team Joins the National Movement:

The spirit of solidarity has not been confined to women’s teams. Last week, players from Iran’s men’s volleyball team, participating in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League in China, also performed the military salute during the national anthem—aligning themselves with the growing wave of patriotic unity.

A Nation United After Tragedy:

In the wake of last month’s deadly aggression—which the international community has largely failed to condemn—Iranians from all walks of life have taken to the streets, rallying behind the nation’s armed forces and leadership. The participation of athletes in this national expression of defiance and resilience has become both a symbol of collective mourning and a beacon of hope.

“Sport has always had the power to unite,” said a spokesperson for the Iranian Sports Federation. “But what we’re witnessing now is something even deeper—a patriotic movement led by our women athletes, born from grief, courage, and unshakable love for the homeland.”

As Iran’s women athletes continue to break barriers and win hearts on the international stage, their salutes are echoing far beyond the arenas—a message of strength, sacrifice, and unwavering national pride.
