Bangladesh High Commission in India’s Agartala vandalised, flag torn, set on fire
Protests at the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote, led to vandalism and the setting of the national flag on fire at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. On Monday, after midnight, the incident happened.
There was footage from the scene that showed demonstrators removing and burning the Bangladeshi flag. According to Amitava Bhattasali of the BBC in Kolkata, a gathering of the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti protesting the detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das took place in Agartala outside the office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh.
Following the meeting, a group of six members proceeded to the High Commission office to hand in a memorandum.Outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office, a group of Hindu youngsters stormed in and promptly tore the Bangladeshi flag. They proceeded to set fire to and vandalize many signboards at the High Commission office.
Hindu Sangharsh Samiti executive member BK Roy said that, despite accompanying the deputation, he and his colleagues were unable to observe anything happening outside the office. High-ranking Tripura Police officers hurried to the scene to confer with officials from the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission’s office.Nonetheless, representatives from India remained silent on the subject. Karnataka had also witnessed a similar incident.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, who served as principal adviser to the interim administration of Bangladesh, had his effigy set ablaze by the demonstrators. At Changrabandha, close to the border with Bangladesh, members of the group also staged a protest march. Strict security measures were in place.
The Pettapole border with India was also the site of protests. West Bengal’s opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, spearheaded the demonstration. There were accusations of minority persecution in Bangladesh made at the gathering. They have also threatened a future border blockade if the persecution does not stop.The source was the BBC.
