The European Union has expressed disapproval of an Israeli assault that jeopardized a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy and resulted in injuries to multiple peacekeepers.

Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, articulated his position on Friday, following an incident in which six Malaysian peacekeepers sustained injuries from an Israeli drone strike that resulted in the deaths of three Lebanese individuals in a nearby vehicle. Borrell emphasized, “It is imperative that all parties guarantee the safety and security of UN personnel, enabling them to fulfill their essential mission in accordance with UNIFIL’s mandate.

”He further stated that the most recent “Israeli assaults on Lebanon have led to a minimum of 53 fatalities and more than 160 injuries within the last 24 hours.” “The European Union advocates for an immediate cessation of hostilities to safeguard civilian lives. It is imperative that all involved entities place the utmost importance on ensuring the safety and welfare of the populations in both Lebanon and Israel,” he articulated.

Forty nations participating in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon are calling for an immediate cessation of Israel’s assaults on peacekeepers. In recent days, numerous participants of the mission, referred to as UNIFIL, have sustained injuries in southern Lebanon amidst Israel’s incursion into the region.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has, on multiple occasions, levied accusations against the Israeli military for purportedly engaging in deliberate assaults on its bases situated in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL has documented more than 40 incidents leading to property damage or injuries among its personnel in southern Lebanon, coinciding with Israel’s demands for the mission to withdraw from its locations.

Kandice Ardiel, the deputy spokesperson for UNIFIL, reported that the Israeli army has verified eight attacks as their origin and has requested UNIFIL to evacuate 29 sites near the Blue Line.

The representative indicated that the UN mission remains steadfast in its commitment to the region, even in the face of multiple intentional assaults observed. Following a year of intermittent fire exchanges along the Lebanese border, which coincided with the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israel launched a ground offensive and a significant aerial campaign against Lebanon in late September.

Over the course of the past year, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 individuals, with the overwhelming majority occurring in the last six weeks alone. A recent UN report indicated that the attacks have resulted in over 3,000 fatalities, representing a “58 percent increase compared to the 1,900 deaths” attributed to the regime’s 2006 conflict with Lebanon.
