Tragedy on Tawau’s Roads: Fish Truck Crashes into River, Passenger Loses Life

A tragic incident occurred this morning at Batu 2 Jalan Apas, Tawau, where a man lost his life after an iron barricade penetrated the pickup truck he was traveling in, subsequently leading to the vehicle’s plunge into the river.

Berita Harian reported that in the incident at approximately 5:20 this morning, Mohd Azrul Shah Abraham, 31, who was the front passenger of the Isuzu Dmax transporting a load of fish, sustained serious injuries while the driver experienced only minor injuries.

Tawau Police Chief Jasmin Hussin reported that the individual involved and the vehicle driver were en route from Jalan Apas to the Tawau Fish Market, transporting a diverse assortment of fish estimated to weigh approximately 1.5 tons.

Upon his arrival at the scene, he noted that the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veering to the left side of the road, striking the bridge barrier, and subsequently entering the river.

The public played a commendable role in rescuing the driver of the vehicle, while the fire brigade efficiently extricated the seriously injured victim. Both individuals were subsequently transported to the hospital via ambulance.

It has been confirmed that Mohd Azrul passed away while undergoing treatment at Tawau Red Zone Hospital.

“The 31-year-old driver has been taken into custody for further investigation in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987, pertaining to allegations of reckless or dangerous driving resulting in a fatality,” stated Jasmin.
