KUALA LUMPUR: After spending 15 years abroad, local singer-songwriter Yuna has gained a wealth of experiences beyond just her music career. Her time in Los Angeles has notably influenced her fashion sense, cementing her status as a trendsetter and fashion icon.

Yuna, reflecting on her experiences, appreciates how celebrities often use their platform to push fashion boundaries, even if their styles provoke public criticism. She cites singer Aina Abdul as an example, noting Aina’s consistent efforts to present fresh and striking looks.

“We need this kind of innovation in the industry. When Aina frequently presents such unique styles, it becomes a part of her identity,” Yuna, whose full name is Yunalis Mat Zara’ai, shared in a recent report.

She was speaking at a photoshoot for popular stylist Abu, part of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2024, which runs until August 4.

Addressing the criticism Aina often faces, Yuna encourages her to persist with her distinctive fashion choices and not be disheartened by negative feedback. Yuna herself has experienced similar criticisms and believes that staying true to oneself is crucial.

“Aina is courageous, and her fashion sense is artistic. Negative comments are something I’ve dealt with as well, and I believe she should keep enjoying her unique style. People love to criticize, but I think they’re becoming more open-minded,” Yuna noted.

In addition, Yuna expressed her joy at the prospect of moving back to Malaysia to be closer to her family after a decade of pursuing her career abroad. However, she reassures that this move does not mean she is stepping away from her music career in the US.

“My husband and I plan to return to Malaysia. As my parents age, being closer to them is important. Our family is supportive of this decision, and we are excited to spend more quality time together,” she explained.

Yuna, who married film and music video director Adam Sinclair on January 26, 2018, also mentioned a recent visit with her late brother-in-law’s wife, Bunga Citra Lestari, who happened to be in Kuala Lumpur.

“Having lunch with Bunga Citra Lestari was a delightful occasion. We usually only connect from afar, so moments like these are special,” she said.

Yuna and Adam are also considering starting a family soon. She hinted at ongoing home renovations to improve their living conditions but kept details brief.

Regarding her music career, Yuna remains optimistic and grateful for technological advancements that facilitate her work. She mentioned that recording in the US usually takes only two weeks, but modern technology helps bridge the distance.

“While the US is ideal for my music career, I find that the quality of life is better here,” Yuna concluded.
