KUALA LUMPUR: The coronation ceremony of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, was a grand and traditional event held at the National Palace today, beginning with a traditional military salute from the three branches of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

According to Bernama, the ceremony at the National Palace Square involved the army, navy, and air force, symbolizing the defense forces’ loyalty to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the Supreme Commander of the MAF.

The event commenced precisely at 9:45 a.m. with the arrival of Sultan Ibrahim and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Raja Zarith Sofiah, at the Royal Pavilion, accompanied by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Upon arriving at the Royal Pavilion, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was honored with a royal salute by the Main Honorary Guard, consisting of four officers and 103 members from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (1 RAMD).

They were led by Major Muhammad Fikri Senan, who also carried the Royal Standard and the 1 RAMD Regimental Standard.

Simultaneously, the national anthem, “Negaraku,” was played by the RAMD Central Band, and the Royal Standards were flown.

Sultan Ibrahim, dressed in the Muskat, the ceremonial attire of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, then inspected the Main Honorary Guard and saluted as he passed the standards.

After the inspection of the Main Honorary Guard, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong once again received a royal salute, and the national anthem played once more.

The royal couple then departed the Royal Pavilion for the Dewan Seri Maharaja to continue with the coronation ceremony, accompanied by Anwar and Dr. Wan Azizah.

As they entered the Balairung Seri of the National Palace to take their seats on the throne, Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith Sofiah, elegantly dressed in golden Johor kurung, captured the attention of all the guests.

The sound of trumpets from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the drumming of the Royal Nobat Group of Perak, playing the “Raja Berangkat” (The King Departs), resonated as the royal couple entered the ceremony, steeped in the traditions of the Malay Rulers.

Datuk Paduka Maharaja Lela, Datuk Azuan Effendy Zairakithnaini, then requested the consent of the Seri Paduka Baginda to begin the coronation ceremony in the Balairung Seri.

The coronation ceremony was attended by 700 guests, including Malay Rulers, Governors, the Prime Minister, foreign diplomatic community, and key national leaders. It was also broadcast live on national television.

Sultan Ibrahim, continuing the second round of the rotation system of the Malay Rulers practiced since the country gained independence in 1957, took the oath and signed the oath of office as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on January 31.

His appointment succeeded Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah of Pahang, whose term as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong ended on January 30, 2024.
