KAJANG: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is currently concentrating on investigating and launching new sports-related Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.

Hannah Yeoh, the minister of youth and sports, stated that this endeavour is crucial to guaranteeing that KBS’s TVET is more targeted and does not cross over with TVET specialties provided by other ministries.

She noted that through the “Reben Kuning” (Yellow Ribbon) project, this programme will also give young people, particularly young offenders, the chance to improve their athletic abilities.

“We offer skills in sports massage and golf caddying, for instance, as part of our TVET programme that is more focused on sports. In order to make sure that the path is clear, we are investigating all TVET curricula that are relevant to sports science.

“We are diversifying our TVET courses… we will not attempt to venture into hospitality where other ministries may have more specific skills for that TVET,” she said to reporters following her attendance at today’s Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur ‘Projek Reben Kuning 2024’ programme at the Kajang Women’s Prison.

Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Razak, the Deputy Commissioner General (Security and Correctional) for Prisons, and Mohd Azhari Mohammad, the Director-General of the National Youth and Sports Department, were also present.

She explained that in order to do this, KBS will keep supporting the “Reben Kuning” project, which provides young prisoners and Henry Gurney School students with a “second chance” plan by providing a variety of skill development training programmes along with career and entrepreneurial prospects.

For example, today, twenty aspiring young ladies from the Kajang ladies’s Prison finished the Basic Golf Caddy Operations Course and the Golf Sports Massage Therapy Course offered by Akademi Kemahiran Belia Golf.

The sports business needs more golf caddies, and a match has been made, according to her talks with golf associations. “We will further expand this effort so that more (prison inmates) can follow these courses,” she declared.

Hannah added that KBS would also broaden the Rakan Muda program’s deployment across all jails around the nation, which involves juvenile convicts participating as a leisure activity programme.

“Rakan Mahir, Rakan Aktif, and Rakan Prihatin are the best programmes for them because we want the young people outside who have skills to share it with them,” the spokesperson stated.

Hannah claims that this programme is a new approach for KBS, ensuring that youth leadership programmes help the other ninety percent of young people in addition to the top 10 percent.
