KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim insisted that the close relationship between Malaysia and China is built on the basis of mutual respect.

Berita Harian reported, he said that the relationship had been established since the reign of the Emperor of China and the Sultan of Malacca long ago.

“Many of my friends abroad question whether our enhanced bilateral relations with China could harm Malaysia, especially as Malaysia is a smaller country.

“I assure you that our relationship (Malaysia – China) is firmly rooted in mutual respect,” he said in a statement on Facebook today.

Regarding the discussion with the Chinese Prime Minister, Li Qiang recently, Anwar said, he reaffirmed his belief in the friendly, courteous and respectful nature of the Chinese leadership.

“Despite the barrage of questions and narratives, especially from the West, I have witnessed a deep understanding and appreciation of cultural differences from China.

“Throughout our discussion, there was no sign of arrogance or condescension. We dealt with the issues arising as equal partners and trusted friends,” he said.

In the meantime, Anwar also took the opportunity to convince the Malaysian and international community that Malaysia’s relationship with China is built on respect and sincere friendship.

“We remain committed to fostering and strengthening the bond between Malaysia and China,” he said.

Earlier, Anwar insisted that Malaysia sees relations with China not only bilaterally, but through a comprehensive strategic lens.

He believes it is in Malaysia’s strategic interest to establish friendship and cooperation with China, and not the other way around.

“We are trying our best to involve China diplomatically and integrate it into regional affairs because it is important for our future together,” he said.
