Only PH, PN candidates are fighting in the Sungai Bakap by-election
NIBONG TEBAL: The Sungai Bakap by-election (PRK) saw a one-on-one contest between candidates from Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) on July 6.
Daily News Report Election Manager, Khairulnizam Hashim, announced that his party accepted the nomination of PH candidate, Dr Joohari Ariffin, 60, at 9.03 am, before being followed by PN candidate, Abidin Ismail, 56, at 9.06 am.
He said, the review found that both candidates were eligible to contest and no objections were received from any party.
The Election Commission (SPR) has set a 14-day campaigning period starting today until 11.59pm on July 5 with early voting on July 2.
Earlier, the nomination form submission process ended at 10 am at the Jawi Multipurpose Hall here.
During the period the nomination center is open, only PH and PN representatives
PH staked former director of the Aminuddin Baki North Branch Institute, Joohari Ariffin while PN named Abidin who is also PAS Vice President Nibong Tebal, Abidin Ismail.
Earlier, Joohari arrived at the nomination center accompanied by hundreds of supporters and PPH leadership consisting of PKR Secretary General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Barisan Nasional (BN) Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, DAP Chairman Lim Guan Eng and AMANAH Strategic Director Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Meanwhile, Abidin was accompanied by PAS Secretary General, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) Vice President Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin and PN Election Director General, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor.
Based on the Electoral Register as of May 24, a total of 39,279 people are eligible to fulfill their responsibilities in the by-election involving 39,222 ordinary voters and 57 police personnel.
The Sungai Bakap state assembly by-election was held following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to inflammation in the stomach.
In the Penang State Election (PRN) in August last year, Nor Zamri who is also PAS President Nibong Tebal, defeated PH candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
The Sungai Bakap state by-election is the eighth by-election held after the 15th General Election in 2022.
