Four decades in the music industry represent more than just a singer’s journey to fame. They also tell the story of the people who helped shape a lasting artistic legacy.
For Malaysia’s Queen of Rock, Ella, the milestone is even more meaningful when her success can be shared with those who have been part of her career journey.
After receiving the Sri Wirama Award at the 25th Music Industry Awards (AIM25) on September 26, Ella chose to express her gratitude in a more personal way by honouring the individuals and communities who have contributed to her artistic journey since she first entered the music industry.
Through the Ella 40 Tahun Gemilang initiative, 50 recipients from various fields were honoured at a private ceremony held at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur two days ago.
The initiative is understood to be a tribute to those who have helped shape the singer’s artistic journey over the past four decades.
The Sri Wirama Award itself is among the most prestigious honours in Malaysia’s music industry, recognising the long-term contributions and dedication of music industry professionals.
For Ella, the recognition was not merely a personal achievement but also an opportunity to acknowledge those who played significant roles in building and sustaining her legacy as a female rock singer.
From musicians, composers, lyricists, music producers, media practitioners, creative professionals and management teams to family members and fan communities, each recipient has their own story and contribution to Ella’s musical journey.
Some were directly involved in songwriting, album production and organising performances, while others helped shape her artistic identity and career direction.
Media practitioners played a role in documenting her artistic development and achievements, while her family, management team and fans remained important sources of support throughout her career.
According to Ella, an artist’s success is never the result of individual effort alone but is built on the commitment of many people whose contributions may not always receive public recognition.
“For Ella, an artist’s success is not solely the result of their own efforts. Behind every song, performance and career journey are many people who work hard, provide support and play important roles, even though their names are not always mentioned.
“After 40 years in the music industry and receiving the Sri Wirama Award, Ella feels this is the right time to share this recognition with those who have been part of Ella’s artistic career.
“Ella wants to celebrate those who have contributed so much to Ella’s career and success because they, too, deserve to be celebrated and appreciated.
“Ella hopes this initiative will inspire other artists to appreciate the people who have contributed to their artistic journeys. Behind every successful artist are many individuals who have helped make that success possible,” she said.
Ella also expressed hope that the initiative would go beyond celebrating her own artistic journey and inspire other industry professionals to acknowledge those who helped them achieve success.
“Ella would be very happy if this gesture of appreciation could inspire other artists to celebrate individuals who have contributed greatly to their artistic journeys.
“For Ella, we do not need to wait until we receive a major award or reach the end of our careers to thank those who have always supported us.
“Everyone involved in an artist’s journey makes their own contribution. Some help create songs, others ensure performances run smoothly, some share our work with fans, while others continue to support us through various challenges.
“All these roles are important and deserve recognition. If Ella’s initiative can encourage more artists to appreciate the people around them, that alone would make Ella very happy,” she said.
Ella added that appreciating those who have contributed to an artist’s success is not simply about presenting awards or formal recognition, but also about remembering every contribution made along the way.
“Ella hopes we can foster a culture of mutual appreciation within the music industry. Whether someone is famous or works behind the scenes, every effort made with dedication has its own value.
“Sometimes, a simple thank you and sincere recognition can mean a great deal to someone who has contributed for many years without expecting anything in return.
“After four decades in this industry, Ella has come to understand even more deeply that an artistic journey is not something one can undertake alone. Ella is grateful that throughout this journey, so many people have believed in Ella, helped Ella grow and continued to offer their support.
“That is why Ella wants to use this opportunity to share her appreciation and remind everyone that the success we enjoy today also belongs to those who have walked alongside us,” she said.
