Anwar Condemns International Community’s Failure to Address Palestinian Suffering

BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the international community’s failure to address the oppression of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, despite the world’s repeated emphasis on the principles of democracy and human rights.

He said the double standards in dealing with the Palestinian issue raised questions about the international community’s commitment to humanity, justice and human rights.

According to him, the principles of democracy and human rights should apply to everyone, regardless of their background, race or religion.

He made the remarks while speaking at the Sumud Nusantara Dinner held in conjunction with the Global Sumud Congress 2026 here on Tuesday.

Anwar said Malaysia’s history as a formerly colonised nation had taught its people to oppose all forms of colonialism, imperialism, injustice and oppression.

However, he said the world was now witnessing atrocities unfolding before its eyes, while international efforts to defend the oppressed remained limited.

He stressed that the suffering of Palestinians was not an issue that had emerged only in the past two or three years but reflected decades of prolonged oppression.

“When it comes to Palestine, why are there different standards in terms of rules, judgments and discussions?” he asked.

Anwar said questions about whether Palestinians were suffering because they were Arabs, Palestinians or Muslims should not influence efforts to defend their rights.

Instead, he emphasised that Palestinians were human beings who should not continue to live under occupation or become victims of oppression and atrocities.

He also expressed support for those involved in the Sumud Nusantara initiative, acknowledging that the struggle faced numerous challenges.

Nevertheless, he said such difficulties should not be used as an excuse to ignore the suffering of Palestinians, particularly children who have endured hardship because of the prolonged conflict.

Anwar said growing awareness in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America offered hope that the struggle for justice for Palestine would continue to gain support.

He expressed hope that sustained international efforts would ultimately lead to the triumph of justice and the liberation of Palestine.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the participation of international delegates in the programme was particularly meaningful as they were part of a global movement advocating freedom and justice.

“Voices from countries such as Spain, Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines demonstrate that the struggle is also gaining attention from the international community,” he said.

He also urged all parties to continue contributing towards helping Palestinians, even through small efforts.

According to him, it was unacceptable for the international community to remain inactive simply because people were preoccupied with their own affairs while Palestinians continued to suffer.

Anwar also expressed hope that Allah SWT would bless all efforts and prayers aimed at securing the freedom of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the independence of Palestine.
