KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today conferred the Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who is currently on a two-day state visit to Malaysia.

El-Sisi was bestowed the prestigious honour at Istana Negara during a special investiture ceremony held at Dewan Seri Maharaja, ahead of a State Banquet hosted in honour of the Egyptian leader, who arrived in the country yesterday.

Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim; Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin; Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani; as well as distinguished guests and members of the Egyptian delegation.

Earlier, El-Sisi was accorded a state welcome at the Istana Negara Parade Square shortly after his arrival at 10.08am.

El-Sisi’s visit, at the invitation of Sultan Ibrahim, marks the first visit by an Egyptian President to Malaysia in nearly three decades, following the last visit by Mohamed Hosni Mubarak in November 1997, when he attended the G-15 Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Mubarak had also made an official visit to Malaysia in 1979 in his capacity as Egypt’s Vice President.

Malaysia and Egypt established diplomatic relations in 1959.
