Dr Mahathir Admitted to IJN for Observation

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) last night for routine treatment.

His Press Secretary, Sufi Yusoff, said the former Prime Minister was exhausted and had not been getting enough sleep following the loss of his beloved wife, the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, on Monday.

“He is exhausted from all the emotional ups and downs, the hot weather and not getting enough rest. All of that is not a good combination for someone who is 101 years old,” he said when contacted.

Tun M in Good Condition

Meanwhile, his son Tan Sri Mokhzani, when contacted, said his father was admitted to IJN last night for health observation.

“The past two days have been extremely stressful for Tun M. For now, he is OK and his condition is not a cause for concern,” he said.

Earlier reports said Dr Mahathir was admitted to IJN after his health appeared to have slightly deteriorated following a tahlil gathering and Isyak prayers at his home in The Mines, Seri Kembangan.

However, his condition was reported to be stable this morning.

Meanwhile, a BH check at IJN found that the police vehicle assigned to escort Tun M was stationed at the lobby of IJN’s rear wing, together with several police personnel and officers from the Special Actions Unit (UTK) and the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).

It is understood that Tun Dr Mahathir was also accompanied by his children and grandchildren while being treated in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

Dr Siti Hasmah Laid to Rest at Pusara Negara on Monday

On Monday, Dr Siti Hasmah died at IJN at the age of 100, leaving behind seven children.

She was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, with state funeral honours.

Dr Siti Hasmah was among the earliest Malay women to qualify as a medical doctor before dedicating her career to the country’s public health sector.

Born in Kampung Jawa, Klang, Selangor, in 1926, she pursued her medical studies at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore on a government scholarship and was the only Malay female student in her cohort.

It was there that she met Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad before they married in 1956.

She was known not only as Dr Mahathir’s steadfast companion but also for her significant contributions through various initiatives to advance maternal and child health as well as community wellbeing.
