‘Nation Shrouded in Sorrow’ – Sultan Nazrin Extends Condolences to Tun M on Passing of Tun Dr Hasmah

PUTRAJAYA: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah extended his condolences to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the passing of his beloved wife, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali.

Delivering his royal address at the 75th meeting of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) at Kompleks Islam here, Sultan Nazrin, who chairs the council, also prayed that Dr Mahathir and his family would be granted strength and perseverance in facing this test from Allah SWT.

“Yesterday, the nation was shrouded in sorrow following the passing of Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali.

“May the soul of the late Tun Dr Hasmah be blessed with divine mercy and placed among the righteous. Let us recite Al-Fatihah together and pray that whatever divine rewards from the recitation of the surah be bestowed upon her soul,” His Royal Highness said on Tuesday.

Dr Hasmah passed away at the age of 100 at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at 9.20am on Monday and was laid to rest at Pusara Negara, Precinct 20, Putrajaya.

The former First Lady was born on July 12, 1926, and married Dr Mahathir on Aug 5, 1956.

The couple had seven children — three daughters and four sons.

The late Dr Hasmah was among the country’s earliest Malay women doctors and had served in public health before playing a significant role in various community initiatives, particularly those related to health and welfare.

Dr Hasmah was the wife of the Prime Minister during Dr Mahathir’s two terms leading the country, from 1981 to 2003 and from 2018 to 2020.

In July, she celebrated her 100th birthday and was recently recognised by ASEAN Records as the Oldest Living Spouse of a Former Prime Minister.
