Najib’s Residence Remains Quiet as Developments Enter Sixth Day

KUALA LUMPUR: No movement in or out of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s residence in Langgak Duta was observed today, even as developments surrounding his conditional pardon entered their sixth day.

Checks by Utusan Malaysia found that several local and international media personnel remained stationed outside the residence today to await the latest developments.

However, the number of media personnel at the location has declined compared with when the development was first announced last Friday.

The area in front of the residence also remained calm as of 2.45pm.

The scorching weather did not deter media personnel still at the scene from continuing to wait for the latest developments regarding Najib’s expected return to the residence.

Utusan Malaysia reported today that Najib is expected to serve the remainder of his prison sentence at his Langgak Duta residence alone and under strict supervision by the Prisons Department, with family visits also restricted.

Lawyer Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican said the location was chosen because no family members reside there, allowing the premises to be used as a place of detention, subject to criteria set by the Director-General of Prisons.

He said house arrest does not mean Najib would be free to live as usual, as the premises would function as a place where he serves his prison sentence, subject to stipulated conditions and restrictions.

Meanwhile, the media reported two days ago that Najib’s house arrest could not be confirmed until the former Prime Minister pays the stipulated RM50 million fine.

Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said Najib would remain detained at Kajang Prison until the fine is fully paid.
