Zoo Negara Hit by Floods, Hippo Seen ‘Swimming’ in Enclosure

PETALING JAYA: Heavy rain that lashed the capital two days ago caused flooding at Zoo Negara, raising public concern over the safety of its animals.

The incident was shared by Zoo Negara Deputy President Datuk Rosly Lana in a video posted on TikTok, showing parts of the zoo inundated by floodwaters.

The footage showed murky water covering walkways and areas surrounding the animal enclosures. The water level in the hippopotamus enclosure had also risen, with the animal seen partially submerged.

The same footage showed several individuals, believed to be zoo staff, wading through the flooded grounds in the rain.

“The situation at Zoo Negara following heavy rain that caused flooding at the zoo.

“Many thanks to the Gombak Volunteer Fire Brigade for always responding quickly and providing assistance. Stay safe, everyone,” he wrote in the post.

Rosly confirmed that all animals at the zoo were safe.

The video attracted widespread attention on TikTok, with several users expressing concern over the welfare of the animals.

“I feel sorry for the animals affected by the flood. Thank you to everyone who helped Zoo Negara,” said Ayda.

“Is Oyen (the cat) safe? I hope it was rescued during the flood,” Nur Dinda commented.

“This is not the first time Zoo Negara has been flooded. Perhaps relocating the zoo should be considered, as the surrounding areas have become increasingly developed,” Arif suggested.
