KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that Malaysia will continue to adhere to the One China Policy despite his previous remarks regarding Taiwan receiving criticism from various parties.
He said this stance is not something new as Malaysia has practised this policy since the administration of the second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
“The One China Policy has been practised since the time of Tun Abdul Razak. In my view, that policy remains and we will continue to defend it.
“Of course we want to find a peaceful solution whenever possible,” he told reporters after officiating the TikTok Shop Summit Malaysia 2026, here, on Thursday.
Commenting on the criticism over his remarks in an interview with Al Jazeera, Anwar said he only took a consistent stance regarding the principle of territorial integrity of a nation.
According to him, this stance is also in line with the approach practised by the United States which does not allow any of its territories to secede after the American War of Independence.
“I believe that stance is correct. The United States itself, through the American War of Independence, did not allow any of its territories to secede.
“So I only took a consistent stance,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed that Malaysia respects China’s stance regarding the Taiwan issue, but is of the view that a peaceful solution is the best approach to resolve any dispute.
Anwar said Malaysia’s stance is also in line with international recognition of the One China Policy accepted at the United Nations (UN) level.
“China is recognised as one country, while the other is referred to as Taiwan. So what I stated is nothing new,” he said.
He however did not rule out the possibility that the way the issue was presented in the interview was among the factors that triggered negative reactions.
“Perhaps the way the question was asked or presented by Al Jazeera gave rise to the criticism,” he said.
