Selangor Proposes to Increase Recipients of Higher Education Study Prize

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government plans to increase the number of recipients of the Higher Education Study Prize (HPIPT) to 5,000 students next year compared to 3,000 recipients this year.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, said that demand for the HPIPT in 2025 and this year has increased to over 5,000 applications, thus prompting the state government to review the existing number of recipients.

“The state government is assessing, with Selangor’s revenue being commensurate, to increase the number of recipients possibly reaching 5,000 to 6,000 people.

“We have given contributions to 5,000 people before, and God willing, we will restore that number next year in the 2027 Budget,” he said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session here today.

He was responding to a question from Datuk Noorazley Yahya (PN‑Bukit Melawati) on whether the state government plans to increase the quota for HPIPT applications following increased demand.

In addition, Amirudin said that the state government also takes into account the application period for HPIPT to ensure that students have sufficient time to submit their applications after receiving confirmation of admission to higher education institutions.

He said that the state government is also considering opening HPIPT applications twice a year to give wider opportunities to students who register for studies at different periods.

HPIPT is a RM1,000 assistance given to Selangor students who pursue studies at recognised public and private higher education institutions.

The assistance is also eligible for students at the Level 4 Skills Certificate, diploma and bachelor’s degree levels.
