Police Arrest Rohingya Woman For Dumping Newborn Fetus

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 19-year-old Rohingya woman has been arrested after being suspected of dumping a newborn fetus in a hotel toilet in Bukit Indah here early last month.

Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner M Kumarasan, said that his department received information regarding the discovery of a fetus wrapped in plastic in an alley around Taman Nusa Idaman, Bukit Indah at 2.39 a.m. on 5 July.

He said that acting on the information, his department arrested a 34-year-old local man at the location where the fetus was found at approximately 4 a.m. on the same day, and the woman at a hotel in the Bukit Indah area.

“Investigations found that the fetus discovered was the child of the female suspect, who had just given birth as a result of her relationship with her former boyfriend.

“The suspect is believed to have given birth to the baby in the hotel room toilet before placing it in a black plastic bag and throwing it through the window of the room on the second floor of the hotel into the alley below the building,” he said in a statement today.

According to him, checks found that the male suspect has two previous criminal records involving crime and drugs, while the female suspect has no previous criminal record.

He said that urine screening tests on both suspects were also found to be negative for drugs.

He said that the man was remanded for four days from 5 to 8 July, while the woman was remanded for 14 days from 5 July until tomorrow under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 to assist with further investigations.

He said that the investigation paper has been referred to the Johor Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office and the female suspect was charged at the Johor Bahru Court today under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, while the male suspect has been made a prosecution witness.

If convicted, the accused faces the death penalty or imprisonment for a term of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, and shall also be liable to whipping of not less than 12 strokes.
