UiTM Student Dies In Accident During Final Week Of Internship

TAWAU: A Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam student did not get to complete his final week of internship after he died when his motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck along the Tawau-Bombalai road yesterday.

In the incident at 7.30 am, the victim, Mazlan Tuwo, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries after his Yamaha 135LC motorcycle was hit by a Mitsubishi Triton driven by a 32-year-old local woman.

Tawau Acting District Police Chief, Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt said preliminary investigations found that the victim was travelling from Merotai to the Tawau District Education Office to undergo his internship.

The pickup driver, who is also a civil servant, was travelling from Sungai Imam towards the Felda Umas Health Clinic.

At the scene, the Mitsubishi Triton driver was believed to have lost control before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the victim’s motorcycle.

“As a result of the collision, the pickup skidded to the road shoulder before overturning into a drain, while the victim was thrown five metres onto the road shoulder,” he said in a statement today.

Medical officers confirmed that the victim died at the scene, while the Mitsubishi Triton driver suffered a fractured shoulder and right arm.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Meanwhile, Tawau District Education Officer, Matnoor Sima, in a statement, informed that the deceased was in his final week of undergoing internship at the office when the accident occurred.
