Top Four Teams In The World Advance To Semi-Finals

ATLANTA: For the first time in World Cup history, the top four teams in the FIFA World Rankings have successfully advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

World No.1 Spain will face France (third) on Wednesday at Dallas Stadium, while Argentina (second) will meet England (fourth) on Thursday at Atlanta Stadium.

The success of these four teams reaching the semi-finals was also aided by the new draw format introduced by FIFA specifically for this tournament, which features 48 teams.

Under the new system, the four highest-ranked teams in the world were placed in separate quadrants to ensure they would not meet before the semi-final stage.

However, the key condition to enjoy that advantage was that they had to win their respective groups, something that Spain, Argentina, France and England successfully achieved.

As a result, Spain could not meet Argentina before the final, while England and France were placed on different paths in the knockout phase and could only potentially meet Spain or Argentina in the semi-finals.

FIFA explained that the change was made to ensure ‘competitive balance’ through the creation of ‘two separate paths to the semi-finals.’

Now, that strategy has become a reality as the semi-finals feature Spain against France and England against Argentina.

Such an approach is not unfamiliar in sports, with Wimbledon and the new Champions League format also using a system to separate seeded teams to avoid early meetings.

The FIFA Rankings were first introduced in 1994, but were not used to determine World Cup draws in that year.

In several previous editions, high-ranking teams often failed to meet expectations.

For example, Belgium (2022), Germany (2018), Spain (2014), Italy (2010) and France (2002) were among the top four in the world but failed to advance past the group stage.

In fact, since the 1998 World Cup, it had never happened that all four top-ranked teams in the FIFA Rankings successfully advanced to the semi-finals in the same edition.

When FIFA announced the format change for the 2026 World Cup draw, the governing body did so openly and explained that their goal was to prevent the giant teams from meeting too early in the tournament.
