SHAH ALAM: Seeking help when facing mental health challenges is not a sign of weakness, but rather a courageous step to take care of oneself, said SAPOT Co-Founder, Nureen Hamka.

SAPOT is a mental health support platform that provides a safe space for individuals before they seek professional help.

Nureen said many still hesitate to seek support due to societal stigma, whereas early intervention can prevent conditions from becoming more serious.

“Seeking help is the first step towards getting support; it is not a sign of weakness, but rather a display of courage to take care of oneself,” she told Media Selangor.

According to Nureen, among the early signs that are often overlooked are changes in sleep patterns, erratic eating habits, as well as a loss of interest in daily activities or social relationships.

She said these changes are often mistaken for ordinary fatigue, whereas they could be early indicators that someone is struggling with mental health challenges.

“Many people consider these changes as normal, but they are actually among the early signs that should not be taken lightly,” she said.

She said the stigma surrounding mental health issues remains one of the main factors preventing individuals from coming forward to seek help.

Accordingly, SAPOT provides an open, safe and non-judgmental space for the public to share their experiences and receive early support.

“At SAPOT, we want every individual to know that they have a safe space to be heard and supported,” she said.

According to Nureen, based on SAPOT data, individuals aged 25 to 34 represent more than 59 per cent of all those seeking support, with the 25 to 29 age group recording the highest number of users.

She said the findings show that more young adults are brave enough to come forward to seek help when facing mental health challenges.

“What is interesting is that young adults are seen as among the most courageous in coming forward to seek help when facing mental health challenges,” she said.

She expressed hope that the public would not delay seeking help, as early intervention can improve the chances of recovery.
