PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Thailand have reaffirmed their long-standing friendship and pledged to deepen their strategic partnership, with both countries agreeing to accelerate cooperation in trade, border development, security, food security, tourism, the halal industry, and semiconductor manufacturing.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held a bilateral meeting at Perdana Putra on Thursday following a one-on-one discussion between the two leaders.

The leaders later chaired a bilateral meeting involving delegations from both countries, where they reviewed the progress of existing cooperation and explored new areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening regional stability and economic growth.

The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, border development, security, agriculture and food security, tourism, the halal economy, and the semiconductor industry.

A key priority of the meeting was the acceleration of regional connectivity projects, including the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, as well as improvements to cross-border infrastructure at the Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok border crossing. Both leaders said enhanced connectivity would facilitate the movement of people and goods while stimulating cross-border economic activities.

Malaysia and Thailand also agreed to expedite the implementation of initiatives previously endorsed through existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms so that the benefits can be delivered more quickly to the people of both nations.

Prime Minister Anutin expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s active role in promoting dialogue and peace efforts in the region, including its support for the ongoing peace process between Thailand and Cambodia.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly the situation in Myanmar and efforts to preserve peace in southern Thailand. They reaffirmed the importance of ASEAN’s principles of dialogue, mutual understanding, and peaceful resolution of disputes in addressing regional challenges.

Both leaders concluded that Malaysia and Thailand would continue strengthening their bilateral relations based on mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to exploring new opportunities for cooperation that deliver tangible benefits to their peoples while contributing to the peace, prosperity, and stability of the region.
