Foxborough: Paraguayan President Santiago Pena has declared a public holiday today to celebrate the historic achievement of the national team in stunning Germany to advance to the Round of 16 of the World Cup.

Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets in tournament history by defeating the four-time world champions 4-3 in a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of extra time.

“Today the entire nation celebrates it.

“We celebrate the victory of a team that embodies the true identity of this country: resilience, confidence and the spirit of a people who never give up,” Pena said via a post on platform X, alongside a picture of him signing the public holiday declaration order.

“It is necessary to facilitate all Paraguayans to gather and celebrate this historic moment together,” read the content of the decree.

Paraguay becomes the second South American country to declare a public holiday after pulling off a shock win over Germany in the World Cup.

Last week, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa also announced a public holiday after his country defeated Germany 2-1 in a Group E match, confirming their place in the knockout stage.
