Foreign Ministry Confirms No Malaysians Killed in Narathiwat Explosion Incident

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Malaysians were killed in the improvised explosive device (IED) explosion incident in Narathiwat Province, Thailand, today.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that the incident caused a vehicle belonging to a Malaysian citizen to be reportedly affected at around 11.45 a.m. local time, and is being closely monitored through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla.

“The Consulate General is actively communicating with local authorities to gather authentic information and to channel appropriate consular assistance to affected parties,” it said in a statement.

Earlier, media reported that two Malaysians were injured after being hit by a bomb explosion under a drain along Highway 42, Kampung Phrai Wan, near the Tak Bai sub-district, Narathiwat, today.

The victims were identified as Abdullah Syarapi Abd Rahman, 45, from Kelantan, and Muhammad Yusri Udin, 38, from Sabah.

Narathiwat Provincial Police Chief, Major General Prayong Kotsakha, said Abdullah sustained injuries from bomb shrapnel to his forehead, serious injuries to his left leg and injuries to his head, while Muhammad sustained only minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advised Malaysians residing in or travelling to southern Thailand to remain vigilant, prioritise their personal safety and fully comply with all safety instructions issued by local authorities.

“To facilitate communication and the channelling of consular assistance more swiftly, Malaysians are also urged to register and constantly update their contact information through the e-Consular portal (https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my),” it said.
