LHDN Senior Officer, Doctor and Child Killed in Crash

PEKAN: Three individuals, including a doctor and her two-year-old daughter, as well as a senior officer from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), were killed in a collision involving three vehicles at Kilometre 67 of the Kuantan – Segamat Road near Chini here yesterday.

The fatalities in the crash, which occurred at approximately 6 pm, were identified as Segamat Hospital medical officer Dr Mohamad Zekry Zuhairy Mohd Atan, 33, his daughter Dhea Sofia, 2, and LHDN Cyberjaya Branch Senior Assistant Director Azaharuddin Mohd Ali, 46.

Pekan District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin stated that the accident also resulted in injuries to three passengers in the car, two passengers in the MPV, and the driver of a pickup truck.

According to him, at the time of the incident, the car driven by the medical officer and the MPV driven by Azaharuddin were travelling from Segamat towards Kuantan, while the pickup truck, driven by a 31-year-old man, was coming from the opposite direction.

“Investigations revealed that the crash is believed to have occurred after the pickup truck attempted to overtake a lorry.

“However, the vehicle is believed to have lost control and veered into the right lane, colliding with the car and MPV from the opposite direction.

“As a result of the crash, the drivers of the car and MPV died at the scene,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Zaidi added that a young girl was confirmed dead upon arrival at the Chini Health Clinic.

He said the three injured car passengers were the wife of Dr Mohamad Zekry Zuhairy, who is also a medical officer at Segamat Hospital, Dr Hana Ibrahim, 35, and his father and mother, aged 72 and 80 respectively.

“Also injured were the MPV passengers, namely Azaharuddin’s wife, Fatimah Awing Kechik, 46, and his son Aiman Faez Al-Amini, 15,” he said.

All injured victims are currently being treated at Pekan Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have also been sent to the same hospital for post-mortem procedures.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing fatal accidents.
