KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) industry continues to record strong growth, with the cumulative number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for passenger use reaching 94,165 units nationwide since 2018.

Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said the rising adoption of EVs reflects the country’s growing commitment towards sustainable transportation and a greener economy.

He stressed that EVs are no longer viewed merely as a global trend but have become a strategic necessity closely linked to investment opportunities, industrial competitiveness, energy security and public well-being.

In a Facebook post following the National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC) Meeting 1/2026 held at Menara MITI, Fadillah said the government remains focused on strengthening Malaysia’s EV ecosystem and accelerating the industry’s long-term development.

“Malaysia has demonstrated encouraging progress in EV adoption, particularly in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) category,” he said.

Fadillah added that the meeting aimed to identify practical and high-impact solutions that can be implemented in the near future to further enhance the nation’s EV industry and supporting ecosystem in a more progressive, coordinated and competitive manner.

The government has been actively promoting EV adoption through various initiatives, including infrastructure expansion, investment incentives and industry collaborations, as Malaysia moves towards achieving its low-carbon and sustainable mobility goals.

The steady increase in BEV usage is also seen as a positive signal for the country’s automotive transformation agenda and clean energy ambitions.
