KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will introduce upgraded versions of the MyKad identity card and passport starting this June, featuring enhanced security elements designed to improve protection against forgery and strengthen document integrity.

The announcement came following a visit to the Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia complex in Kuala Lumpur, where a demonstration session on the application and printing process for the new identity documents was observed.

The upgraded MyKad and passport are expected to include significantly more advanced security features compared to the current versions in use, making them more modern, secure, and harder to counterfeit.

Authorities said the improvements are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national identity systems and ensure the safety and reliability of official identification documents for Malaysian citizens.

However, officials also advised the public not to rush to replace their existing MyKad or passport, as the current versions remain valid and can continue to be used for all official and daily transactions without issue.

The rollout of the new documents marks a step forward in Malaysia’s efforts to modernise its identification system while enhancing overall security standards.
