Malaysia Strengthens Food Security Measures Amid Middle East Crisis

Kuala Lumpur: Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Malaysia is taking proactive measures to safeguard its food security, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim scheduled to chair a crucial meeting of the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) on Tuesday.

The high-level meeting will focus on strategies to mitigate the ongoing conflict’s impact, particularly on the country’s agriculture and food supply sectors.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin highlighted that the crisis has triggered a global ripple effect, including rising energy prices and disruptions along critical trade routes, placing additional pressure on economies across Asia.

“The Middle East situation is no longer confined to the region. It has precipitated an energy crisis and rising oil prices, which are directly impacting our economy,” Chan said in a statement posted on Facebook.

He noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, have heightened concerns over the stability of fuel supplies worldwide. These disruptions, in turn, have affected food supply chains and contributed to rising living costs.

The government intends to leverage the MTEN meeting as a platform to explore both immediate and long-term measures to support industry stakeholders, particularly those in fisheries and crop cultivation, who are among the hardest hit by the current developments.

Chan emphasized that while Malaysia remains resilient, proactive planning and early intervention are essential.

“We cannot afford complacency. The government is committed to taking preemptive action to ensure we are prepared for any eventuality, including worst-case scenarios,” he added.

Earlier, Chan attended a briefing with Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, where officials reviewed the current state of the nation’s food supply and discussed strategies to strengthen mitigation efforts.

As global uncertainties continue, Malaysia’s leadership is working to maintain stable food security and minimize economic shocks for both producers and consumers.
