Prime Minister Anwar Calls for Public Support as Budi95 Fuel Quota Reduced Amid Global Pressures

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to remain patient and understanding following a temporary reduction in the Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) fuel quota, as the government navigates ongoing global economic challenges.

Beginning April 1, the monthly quota under the Budi95 programme will be adjusted from 300 litres to 200 litres. Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, said the move was made after careful consideration of global oil market instability and economic pressures linked to the continuing conflict in West Asia.

He emphasized that the adjustment is not permanent and will remain in place only until conditions improve, although he acknowledged that there are currently no clear signs of immediate recovery.

“I sincerely appeal for the people’s cooperation and understanding. This is not an easy decision, and we are aware it may cause inconvenience to some,” Anwar said in a special address on Thursday.

The Prime Minister reassured the public that despite the reduced quota, the subsidised price of RON95 petrol will remain unchanged at RM1.99 per litre, ensuring continued support for the majority of Malaysians.

He stressed that the government’s priority is to safeguard national resources while minimizing the burden on citizens. The adjustment, he said, is also part of broader efforts to curb leakages and prevent abuse of fuel subsidies.

Anwar issued a stern warning against smuggling and misuse of subsidised fuel, highlighting that such activities have led to losses amounting to hundreds of millions of ringgit each month. He called on enforcement agencies to intensify monitoring and take firm action against offenders.

At the same time, he commended members of the public who have played an active role in reporting irregularities at petrol stations, whether involving locals or foreigners.

“This collective responsibility is crucial in ensuring that subsidies reach those who truly need them,” he added.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to reviewing the policy once global economic conditions stabilise, with the aim of restoring the original quota when feasible.
