Winter Freeze Halts Football Action Across Germany and England

Severe winter weather has forced the postponement of several football matches in Germany and England, as heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures made playing conditions unsafe.

In Germany, Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture between St. Pauli and RB Leipzig in Hamburg was called off after snow and ice blanketed the pitch at the Millerntor Stadium. Stadium operators took the decision following consultations with local authorities, citing safety concerns for players, staff, and supporters.

“This is due to the large amount of snow and ice across the entire stadium grounds and the associated safety risks on match day, as well as the critical overall situation in Hamburg,” St. Pauli said in a statement, adding that a new date for the match would be announced soon.

Germany has experienced heavy snowfall and prolonged freezing temperatures in recent days, with more wintry conditions forecast over the weekend. As the Bundesliga resumes after its three-week winter break, there are growing concerns that other fixtures, including Union Berlin versus Mainz 05 and Werder Bremen versus Hoffenheim, could also be affected.

In England, extreme cold brought on by Storm Goretti has disrupted domestic cup and league football. Salford City’s FA Cup third-round match against Swindon Town, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to frozen sections of the pitch.

Despite covering the surface and using heat lamps throughout the week in an effort to thaw the ground, Salford City said conditions remained unsafe. “Despite the best efforts of the ground staff, there are still parts of the pitch that are frozen,” the club said, explaining that the early decision was made in consultation with the Football Association and Swindon Town to avoid unnecessary disruption for travelling supporters.

The cold snap has also led to the postponement of three League Two matches on Saturday, with games at Oldham Athletic, Chesterfield, and Accrington Stanley all called off.

With freezing temperatures expected to persist, football authorities in both countries are monitoring conditions closely as winter weather continues to threaten the weekend’s match schedule.
