Flood Situation Worsens in Perak, Penang, and Kedah as Evacuees Surge Past 4,700

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24: Continuous heavy rainfall across the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia has worsened flood conditions in Perak, Penang, and Kedah, with the number of evacuees rising to 4,743 people as of Friday night, up from 4,252 earlier in the evening.

In Perak, flood victims across four districts increased significantly to 2,806 people from 955 families as of 8pm, compared to 2,496 people from 857 families earlier in the day.
According to the Perak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, another relief center was opened in Manjung at SK Pantai Remis, bringing the total number of operational centers to 25, covering the districts of Larut Matang and Selama, Manjung, Kerian, and Perak Tengah.

In Penang, the number of evacuees has also risen, with 928 people from 252 families currently taking shelter at seven relief centers as of 8pm, up from 749 people earlier in the day.
Data from the Social Welfare Department’s disaster information portal indicated that two centers in Seberang Perai Tengah, Dewan Banjir Guar Jering and Sekolah Rendah Islam Maahad At-Tarbiah Guar Jering, were closed at 7pm, while two others remain open: SK Guar Perahu and SMK Permatang Pasir.
A new center has been opened in Seberang Perai Utara at SK Padang Menora, increasing the total there to four centers, now housing 734 evacuees from 200 families.
On Penang Island, the only operating center is SK Tan Sri Awang Salleh in the Barat Daya district, which is accommodating 24 evacuees from nine families.

Meanwhile, in Kedah, the situation has remained mostly stable, with 1,009 victims from 312 families currently seeking refuge at eight relief centers as of 9pm, a minor increase from 1,007 victims earlier in the evening.
The Kedah Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that all victims are from the Kulim and Kuala Muda districts.
A total of 957 people from 288 families in Kulim are being housed at seven centers, including SMA Isaniah Jangkang, SK Pagar Museh, Dewan Orang Ramai Sungai Karangan, Surau Kampung Padang Meha, Surau Taman Sang Kancil, Dewan Kampung Paya Tok Betok, and SRJC Khai Min.
In Kuala Muda, 52 victims from 24 families are being accommodated at SJKC Chong Cheng.

In Kelantan, several key roads, including Jalan Bukit Sireh, Kampung Bedal, and Kuala Nal, were reported flooded this evening following continuous downpours. However, no evacuations have been carried out so far, according to Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Station chief Nik Ahmad Afsham Nik Pa.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert, follow official updates, and be prepared for possible evacuations, as the rainy weather is expected to persist over the weekend.
