MUAR, Oct 13: Authorities have set up a control post to coordinate an ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operation after a car reportedly plunged into a river near Pekan Panchor here on Monday afternoon.

Muar Deputy OCPD Supt Muhammad Aidil Roneh Abdullah said police received an emergency call from a member of the public at around 2.30pm, reporting that a vehicle had lost control and veered into the river.

“We have established a control post at the location, together with personnel from the Health Ministry, Civil Defence Force, and the Pagoh and Muar Fire and Rescue Departments,” he said in a statement.

He added that no victims have been located so far, and the search operation remains ongoing as of Monday evening.

Supt Muhammad Aidil also urged the public to come forward with any information related to the incident by contacting the Muar District Police Headquarters at 06-956 4800 or to assist directly in the investigation.

“We advise the public not to spread unverified information or speculation that may interfere with the search and rescue operation,” he cautioned.

Earlier reports suggested that a driver may have been trapped inside the vehicle after it plunged into Sungai Panchor following an accident. Videos circulating on social media showed firefighters and police conducting SAR operations, with some unconfirmed claims alleging that a married couple fell into the river after having lunch nearby.

Authorities have not confirmed these claims, and rescue efforts are expected to continue into the night.
