Malaysia Opens 18th ASEAN Environment Ministers’ Meeting with Call for Inclusivity and Stronger Climate Action
LANGKAWI: Malaysia today opened the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME) and related meetings, urging member states to strengthen cooperation and present a united front on global climate issues ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) later this year.
Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, in his opening remarks at the Langkawi International Convention Centre (LICC), welcomed ministers, senior officials, and dialogue partners from across ASEAN. He noted that Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025, is honored to host the gathering in a milestone year marking the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community.
“With the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ our aspiration is shared progress, ensuring no one is left behind. This reflects our determination to live in harmony with nature and to build a resilient, future-ready ASEAN,” Johari said.
He outlined three main priorities for the meeting: Strengthening regional cooperation on key environmental priorities through closer collaboration among AMME, ASOEN, and ASEAN sectoral bodies. Finalizing ASEAN’s common position for COP30, particularly on climate finance, adaptation, loss and damage, just transition, and the Global Goal on Adaptation. Advancing implementation of multilateral environmental agreements such as the Paris Agreement, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Global Plastic Treaty negotiations.
Johari stressed that AMME is a vital platform not only to review progress but also to scale up partnerships and reaffirm ASEAN’s collective commitment to sustainable development. “Together, we can demonstrate ASEAN’s leadership in creating a sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient future,” he said.
He also invited delegates to experience Langkawi’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and Malaysia’s renowned hospitality during their stay.
The four-day AMME and related meetings will discuss ASEAN’s environmental priorities and are expected to produce outcomes that will guide the region’s joint efforts in biodiversity conservation, climate action, pollution control, and sustainable development.
